Anime Reporter went to Anime Dublin

Ronan Daly

Yesterday, April 11th, was Anime Dublin, a small, one-day anime convention held in, that’s right, you guessed it, the middle of Dublin city. Anime Reporter was lucky enough to attend in my live-action identity of Ronan Daly, (i.e. that guy in the Squirtle Squad t-shirt).

While the convention is relatively small in scale, it boasts a pretty constant buzz of activity between its three large conference halls. In one, there was a near-constant stream of pretty obscure and also pretty excellent anime series subtitled with Japanese audio. In another room, a variety of video games systems were set up for people to compete in some pretty novel games, with retro classics like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the Gamecube version of Super Smash Bros, to a few more modern titles like Call of Duty and Super Street Fighter 4.

There was also a pretty excellent level of merch available for sale and it was all this anime reporter could do to avoid running to the nearest ATM and bankrupting myself.

Yes, the merch was indeed strong in this one.

Not only that, but, despite the cons restrictive numbers (maximum 350 attendees), there was a

great buzz of enthusiasm and activity throughout, as well as some serious levels of cosplay at work.

The convention runs from 10am until around 11pm the same day and there’s always something happening. Games, screenings, shopping or just heaps of anime-related banter, this con had it going on.

The theme of the con this year was Kawaii or "cute", so to commemorate this, please enjoy this adorable picture of a dessert.

On a personal note, I don’t think I’ve ever had so many hits on Streetpass on my 3DS in a single day. (My Mii is the one in red who looks like a monkey). I had a really nice time and met some very cool people. I got to be a werewolf in a game of Werewolf and there was a pretty hilarious anime-themed game of Cards Against Humanity, though I never did get to play my Overdramatic Elves card.

While Anime Dublin is over for this year, it’s something that I’d have to recommend for any otakus in the Dublin area for next year and at 10 euro for a ticket, it’s a real bargain, though you really should pre-order to make sure you’ve got a place before they sell out. Make a note of it, this is one seriously anime-packed day!

Hi I’m sorry, it’s been a very long time but I was the Law cosplayer and I didnt know my photo and name would be online, would it be possible to crop me out or remove me from the page? I apologise for the trouble.

  2. Hi Teresa, that’s absolutely no problem at all 🙂
